Yannick – No intermission

Is now online. It was my first experiment with the computer programming language Processing. Basicaly all of the animation was done using it – crossing the data, and randomizing the data from the sound information and the movements of the hands of Yannick Nezet Seguin.

The hot summer of 2010

Yes, it was. Zagreb, Annecy, than vacation. Just back from Japan. But the autumn won’t be better. Toronto film festival, more VJing, workshops, then jurying at Moscow. Then more work, exhibitions, several workshops, then more festivals, jurying at other festivals. No, I won’t do another film this Year, but won’t sleep too much. After the hard work of doing a film, there is always a need to do more work connected with direct public contact. The Animation film making is a lonely job, and I always need to push the limits after, so I meet more people, and be in the boiling water.

Lipsett wins at Annecy

More later… Now I have to sleep.

Lipsett mistery continues

Today, just 2 weeks before the film sorts out (another coincidence?) , someone put never seen before archives regarding Arthur Lipsett, on e-bay. Those are treasures. It looks like this guy/woman was a really good friend of him. He (or she) got the final letter from his aunt, about his death, and his gravestone. Arthur Lipsett ghost doesn’t find his peace, evidently. It comes, and comes again into my life, strangely elated (Strangely elated was the first and original title of the film Very nice, very nice .

Lipsett. 2 weeks before the prémiere.

Processing drawings

A few of the “drawings” that I created for my new film “Yannick: No Intermission”. Actually, those are computer created images, using the open source programing language “processing”, generated from the combination from the hands movements of Yannick Nézet Seguin, and the music of Bruckner’s the 8th Symphony.

A Place for a Film, a Place for…

Sometimes I think – OK, now, it is relatively easy to show Your works, and to achieve fast recognition, success, interest, or simply – traffic. So, I make a film, post it on Internet, and that’s it. Like I was doing it 10 Years ago. I had my pleasure, the traffic of my site is huge, daily is much bigger, than a screening in a big (for today standards) cinema, it will be seen.

So, why do I need festivals? Why do I need to send my films, to bother about selections, deadline, shipping costs, etc. Pay expensive plane tickets t o get there, and have a screening for half of the people that I can achieve in one day on my site?

Because, the reason why a director makes films is the same as the artists. An artist (after having his pleasure of creating a work at his studio) needs a vernissage. An Opening. He needs to see his works out of his studio. To share the excitement of showing his works for first time! A musician cannot live without his live shows, without the feeling of the public. A symphony orchestra cannot exist without making concerts. A writer cannot survive without going to the bookstore, and have his book in his hands, meet his readers, see it together with the other books, even if it’s hidden on the Nth shelf, and no one buys it.

Showing my film online is one thing. But being on a screening of my films, is another. Especially on a big festival. Every time when I attend a festival, and go the screening of my film, I don’t go, so I see it again, and egocentrically to flatter myself, and fall into self masturbation. I go to feel the breath of the people in the hall. I can say exactly, at what row, and seat, what kind of feeling is projected. I like the sense of hearing the pulse, the hate even, the discomfort of this man, 3 rows from mine, in left. The excitement of the woman 5 rows from here, 12 seat. The snoring of the ado 2 rows behind. I think, I can feel everybody in the hall. And this is why, without showing my films on festivals, and being there, I wouldn’t make films.

I prefer to be in a screening room with 20 people, than 200 000 viewers to see my film online.Yes,  both, together, they provide a fuel for my next film. Doesn’t matter if they like it or not.

It is like having sex without a partner. It is just a masturbation. You have the pleasure for Yourself. But You don’t share it. This is why the filmmakers need the live screenings, and the festivals. It is the only way to keep the films alive. Without this – we die.

“Yannick – No Intermission” online prémiere

The Online premiere of my new short film “Yannick – No Intermission” was postponed…  Stay tuned for a new date… Here is the poster. (The most important part of a film is his poster, don’t forget!)

An interesting critic for “Drux Flux”

I’ve found very interesting review on the web today, it is about my film “Drux Flux”. I love the point of view of this critic, it is from the web blogue Vagabonguru.:

Yannick

Just finished a film-portrait of the famous Young conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin(Rotterdam Symphonic Orchestra, MET, London Symphonic Orchestra, etc…). And he said in the film, something, that I’ve never realized. I share those words:
The way I understand it, like everything else, humans are created in balance.
There’s always a yin and a yang. There’s always black and white, always a positive and a negative.
There’s hope and there’s doubt. And since I’m someone who’s been greatly blessed in life, extremely happy and fundamentally optimistic,
I often wonder why I’m so attracted to works that deal with the end of life, with death, suffering and sadness?

Allmost done.

The new film is almost done. I feel ok. I can have some sleep now, and watch some films. For the start – Eric Rohmer. I love his films, I think he is the best director from the “nouvelle vague”. Though, it is stupid to be classified like this. OK, he is not the best. It is just like this – i like it at the moment. I wished there were more new films like this now, at the moment. It seems that the current model in the cinema doesn’t really work… Which means, that it won’t be long and we will have a new “nouvelle vague”, if we don’t have it already, hidden. What about the Latin America cinema…

About the cinema, and the money

A text by Xavier Dolan, responding critics over his speech at the Jutra gala. In French. I totally support every word he says:

And, if we talk about animation? What is going to be said? About overpraised animated shorts, over budgeted, done for 10 Years, and seen only from 50 person? About doubtlessly significant for me projects, boring, and pretentious, so even their creators start snoring watching them? No comments. Be clever. And don’t abuse the system! It is good, but don’t rape it! Cause the day when we will all be on the street, depressed, and poor, and without financing, and asking our grand mother for a bunch of money to do our sound, and make a single 35 copie, is approaching… Don’t force the coming of this day with Your films! It is a déja vu… I’ve lived it in the country, where I came from. I saw it in our neighbors, too.
Or we have to start from now pitching for Kleenex and Charming advertising… Without success, of course. They need “no brainers”, no teasers. Better create a viral video, and post it on Youtube,. And wait for God(o) to come, following Our traffic fame…
